Green Building

Global warming, drought, environmental pollution and fast depletion of natural resources have thrown the construction of environment-friendly buildings into sharp relief in the construction sector. While there is an upsurge of interest in the construction of environment-friendly buildings, constructions known as green building have emerged. Green buildings, being certified as per certain standards have introduced a new trend and sector in the construction sector as more valuable, nature-friendly, ecological and comfortable buildings which also reduce energy consumption. Buildings use approximately one third of the world’s energy. Energy savings, nature conservation and a comfortable living environment are targeted through green building practices. The title “green building” is given to a construction through selective approaches on site selection, design, innovation, properties of construction materials used in the building, construction technique and recycling of waste materials.

PROPERTIES OF THE PRACTICE

• During the design stage planning through green building standards, optimization of construction costs by courtesy of simple and innovative solutions•Doğal çevre ile uyumlu bir yapılanma

• A structuring harmonious  with the natural environment

• Green roof

• Ensuring energy savings and developing noise and heat insulation through efficient insulation systems

• An architecture able to use as much daylighting in the building as possible

• Efficient solutions in HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) system

• Use of construction materials and decoration products with low VOC (volatile organic compound) values

• Use of solar energy by courtesy of photovoltaic panel systems

• Performing the landscaping through using plants and trees with low water consumption

• Use of construction materials produced through being recycled from waste materials

• Ventilation and illumination by courtesy of motion-sensitive sensors

• Setting up of a system generating the self electricity of the building

• Use of ground source heat(Ground Source Heat Pump System - GSHP)

• Providing half of the heat requirement during the winters from the sun, through tromb wall practices at the south side

Evironmentaly Evaluation Methods

Determining a global standard is almost impossible. The reason behind this fact is that all certification systems are designed as per the relevant country. Certification systems have lots of parameters from the physical structure of the relevant countries to their climates, from their cultures to their building standards. Due to this reason  each country modifies it to fit its conditions. For example ASHREA 90.1 is used in the USA but in Turkey, many groups aren’t even aware of it. Private sector uses it but it isn’t used in public buildings. However LEED predominantly references ASHREA 90.1. So, when the countries adapt these standards they are also expected to raise their own standards.

LEED

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a list of a series of criteria developed by the U.S. Green Building Council.

BREEAM (BRE Envıronmental Assessment Method )

(Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method)

Since its beginnings in July 1990, it is used in a widespread manner in assessments made for new and existing buildings. ECD This method, prepared under the sponsorship of big establishments such as ECD (energy and environment) in order to determine the correct criteria for the environmental performances of buildings is also recognized and approved in the market due to it being implemented independently. Method, which first became popular in England, also started to be accepted in other countries of Europe in time.
